Wimbledon Tennis Championships 2015: Day 5

It’s round 3 of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, arguably the best grand slam in the tennis calendar. Andy Murray has a day off today, spending it on the practice courts with his Swedish hitting partner Jonas Bjorkman. His coach Amile Mauresmo is 7 months pregnant so she’s taking a break from hitting with Andy.

Nick Kyrgios

The flamboyant Australian had the best match of his tennis career so far, beating the strong silent world top 10 ranked Canadian Milos Raonic in 4 sets. Raonic took the first set 7-5, but despite playing excellent tennis throughout, failed to win another set. Nick Kyrgios served 34 aces in the match, and his amusing antics and show-boating was a huge contrast to Raonic’s solid and disciplined approach.

Richard Gasquet

Gasquet’s famous one handed topspin backhand was on fire today, as he beat Grigor Dimitrov to go through to the 4th round.

Heather Watson

Heather was out-gunned in the first set, losing 6-2. Then Britain’s number one took the second set off Serena Williams (6-4) to level the match, and broke Serena’s serve at the start of the third set. After going 3-0 up in the second set, everyone started thinking that an epic upset was coming. However, Serena fought back to win the deciding set 7-5.

Serena showed great sportsmanship by applauding one of Heather’s genius shots. At the end of the match Serena’s reaction was respectfully subdued, and she was nearly in tears during her victory press conference.

Novak Djokovic vs Bernard Tomic

The top seeded Serb beat Tomic in straight sets (6-3, 6-3, 6-3) to surge into the 4th round.

Maria Sharapova

Sharapova beat Irina Camelia Begu in straight sets to go through to the 4th round.

Stan Wawrinka vs Fernando Verdasco

Wawrinka beat the Spaniard in straight sets to cruise through to the 4th round.

Venus Williams

Through to the 4th round. Another Venus v Serena final coming up?
